I'M A GRAMPA!

I will actually edit this blog. No more typos. Or is it "typoes"? All that being said, on to the topic.

Newt has announced he will no longer be the pit bull we all had assumed because in his words "I have become a grandfather".  This is unbelievable. I could offer some help in this area. Consider the following options.

"I was wrong and behaved disgustingly. I can only ask the forgiveness of those I harmed."

"I have no excuses. I acted badly and let my passions run my life. I have been trying to do better."

I would even go for "I humbly submit that I did nothing to the general public with my private conduct. I harmed and offended the people who were close to me. You are not the offended party. Get a life. I cannot change the past but I can make every effort to treat those in my life better. An apology to the public does nothing to ease the pain that I caused my ex-wife. I hope for her forgiveness."

"As for my lobbying efforts I must admit that this was venal and materialistic on my part. There is no excuse. It was about avarice and my ego. I will try to do better in the future. These people are vermin who attempt to influence Federal Expenditures  and regulations for private gain. They are in large part responsible for the financial crisis in which we currently find ourselves. The founding fathers had no use for them. I am ashamed of myself as I have a PhD. in history and am aware of this. My second initiative if elected President will be to make any contact by a former elected official with a sitting member of congress a felony with a mandatory minimum sentence of being water boarded like he was a member of al Quaida."

I would vote for the bastard myself if only to hear the screams.

I'm a grandfather? This is an indictment of what we call a campaign.

The truly sad part of all this is that competition is supposed to bring out the best in us. The opposition forces me to do better than my best and the country benefits. "I am a grandfather?" Surely you can do better. America deserves better. America deserves accountability. I believe in accountability. Does that make me a Republican? Could you imagine our real cowboy president Teddy Roosevelt saying "I'm a grandfather."? On the other hand he did things like place himself in physical danger. He was the real deal.

As for becoming a Roman Catholic I have only one piece of advice. If you shake hands with a bishop wash them ASAP. I mean if you have read the papers in the past few years...

CHILDREN AT MSNBC

OK, Ms. Coulter call Sen. McCain a "Douchebag". On MSNBC. This should be the time when they lose all their sponsors. This is what we do not need. It is fun but it leads to the political dynamic we currently enjoy. There is no question that she would not have used that kind of political language were he there. Carlin was on the Tonight show with Ms. Coulter and there was no explosion. He explained it this way. "It was Leno's House.  I have no desire to disrespect Jay." There are no adults in the media.
I must say in this regard I believe the HELLS ANGELS subscribe to the theory that a punch in the mouth is the best response to person insults or name calling. There are probably a couple of folks who would give Ms. Coulter a "Tune Up". I say it should be on pay per view. I would watch. This is not about her political ideas as she has none. It is about the Republican ideal of Accountability. My Republican Hero Teddy Roosevelt threatened to take another legislator outside and educate him. Harry Truman My Democratic Hero threatened a critic thusly.  "I'm gonna kick his nuts off!". This was in response to what Mr. Truman regarded as unfair criticism of his daughter's piano playing. It was personal.
I want her to throw down with Ms. Clinton after Ms. Clinton had a couple of shots of Dark Eyes or Jim Beam. Again, I would PAY good money to see it.

The way I see it, we need self control in our political life. She does a disservice to the nation. We need adults.

The Circular Firing Squad

I had been hoping to get some reasonable political commentary but to no avail. Solyndra and Herman Cain are about it.
Not even any humour. The Tea Party needs to extract the stick from their collective large intestine and Michael Moore is just  annoying. Wouldn't you think that a walking heart attack would do something ANYTHING about his health. By the way Mike, LOOSE THE HAT. If it came down to head wear, only Herman Cain is fit to be president. You are killing the Democratic Party. And by the way, The demonstrators don't look like they are taking enough drugs. Where is the joy? Every important enterprise needs joy and a sense of purpose. They need more of a sense of whimsy. (I live close to a reservation and have a different view of poverty than they do. Just try living out here for a while and see what life is really like.)

The Tea Party and the Occupy Wall Street crowd both feel like victims but not enough so they will educate themselves. The problem is systemic. Thank Phil Graham of Texas for this along with Slick Willie who signed the Graham Leach Act. The problem is the congress. Not the president or Chris Matthews or Bil O'Reilley.

Bob Schieffer of CBS News was insulted because Cain's campaign manager was smoking in one of the ads. Bob apparently had lung disease and found the ad to be insulting. HE GAVE HIMSELF THE BLEEPIN' DISEASE AND HE WANTS TO BE THE VICTIM? No one else gave him lung disease. He is a news man. What he thinks is unimportant. The narrator is supposed to be unobtrusive. I now know that he will not make an effort to be objective. In the words of the Duke in "Hondo" ..."I always say a man ought to do what he thinks is best." indicating that there are consequences to behaviour. Bob needs to "Sack Up" as my older son is fond of saying. If a man wants lung disease, I say let him have it. Maybe I have been around too many cowboys (real ones with manure on their boots) but I humbly submit Nothing Happened to Schieffer as a result of that image!

I have nothing against Cain but that tax proposal is DOA.  So is Newt's and Romney's. The lawyers and accountants would have to be water boarded for that to pass. The tax code will not be changed by the president. Not unless he is in suicide mode. It is insane in terms of being understood by anybody.

Ronnie Reagan raised taxes 11 times. Because it was necessary. He had his own Solyndra. Nobody with the intelligence of a sand hill crane can defend that crap. The money is gone. Before we have hearings on that let us investigate the other fiscal judgments currently being made and see if there are other bombs about to go off. Let us fix what we can and stop trying to get even.

Newt Bleepin' Gingerich said that if congress would spend three days a week working on what was easily passed and the other two arguing the situation would improve. He said if all that was going to happen was continuing rancor they might as well go home. This from the guy who shut the government down! Maybe even HE can come to his senses. He also said they wouldn't do it.

I have been looking for a Democrat to criticise his party. I mean trenchant commentary. I mean incisive thought. Does any Democrat in the House or Senate have a degree in math, physics or chemistry?

It is not the job of the government to provide employment. It is their job to provide the necessary conditions for people to take care of themselves.

Last thought. Read Tony Hillerman's "The Great Taos Bank Robbery". It is a great book and truly funny. If you want to know how things work in New Mexico this is a good place to start.

BOHICA!!!

We now face the prospect of the nation's credit rating being lowered by another credit rating agency. The problem is not the president. It is the congress. We are headed down the porcelain receptacle. Again. BOHICA. There is no end in sight. The senators and congressmen are in denial. They think it is impossible to bankrupt the federal guvmint. Inflation is on the way. It is how we will solve the housing crisis and the banking crisis. The money will be worth nothing but the banks will have no option but to take it in the shorts. It is all part of the grand scheme of the Republicrats.

For those of you who voted for W. remember that the war was "Off Budget." That means it did not show up on the balance sheet. The 3/4 of a trillion Tarp Fund was also a joke.

The current occupant of the White House is no different other than he is not trying to hide the spending. The problem is not the occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. It is the congress. We do not live in a dictatorship. Congress appropriates money.

B.O. is currently at 41% in the polls. That sounds terrible until the figure of 13% approval for congress turns up. Then he looks not too bad.

Nobody will conquer this nation from without. But we will bankrupt ourselves. The National Interest no longer exists.

And while we are at it, simplistic slogans do not solve debt. Financial planning does.

In short, we are screwed. It is money and nothing else that runs campaigns.

MONTANA!

Brian Schweitzer

has a surplus in the state treasury. He has a branding iron that reads "Vetoed".  He has state workers driving hybrids. You do not get a Suburban if you are a state employee unless it is absolutely necessary. He has cut the fuel bill for state vehicles in half. Any services which are not essential are curtailed. The state has had budget problems and there is no money for foolishness.

If you want a new community center, statue, building of any kind you better find another source of funding because unless folks are bleeding from the eyes without it, you will get no state money. All the departments in the state gave up 3% of their funds.

He has taken a pay cut and has asked other employees to do the same. In short he is treating state money like it was a household budget. He seems to get along with most folks and is not hostile, but it is funny to see him brand bills the state cannot afford. Some members of the legislature are not happy with him but he has a SURPLUS in the state treasury. He is prudent. He is not one of the "do as I say, not as I do" folks. Good guy.

He also collaborates with other states when possible. He is a good example of what states can do when necessary. There may be hope.

The health care plan is 2,700 pages long. No one knows what is in it. Nancy Pelosi's district received a bunch of opt outs. It is more nonsense. When you look at the federal government and compare it to Montana it is disgusting. Charlie Rose had Ray Delio on last night who said that  a 3% spending cut along with a 3% tax increase gets rid of about half of the deficit in the next ten years. He also said that a serious conversation is impossible at the present time. By serious conversation he means "How do we fix this". In short he is looking for a discussion driven by reason, civility, goals and is solution oriented. It requires that we listen to the other point of view without  any purpose than to understand what is being said. It is not performance art. It requires discipline. Serious conversation requires suspending judgment until all information is gathered. It is not entertainment.

When people who disagree with each other have an actual discussion there begins to develop what is called an insight. It is the purpose of debate.

Neither party wants to have that discussion. They want power without accountability. Don't we all?

There is something in the American Culture that is uncomfortable when the facts contradict the argument. This may account for the lack math skills so evident is many of our political leaders as well as our automotive industry. Domestic manufacturers of autos refused to react to consumer demand until the Asian autos had eaten into the market in sufficient quantity to change the composition of the market. They refused to build fuel efficient autos until there was no choice. One heard such explanations as "You can't tell people what to like". Then what is the purpose of advertising?

Edwards Deming developed what is called continuous quality improvement. It is a system for analyzing performance. Detroit refused. Japan embraced it. Now Detroit embraces it.

Much of the current economic crisis is cultural: America is loath to admit mistakes.

The nonsense on Wall Street in the form of demonstrations is not going to solve anything. It is more Tea Party. This is great political theatre but short on substance or solutions. How many of those folks understand accounting or finance? I suspect there are not many economists in the mix.

Most of our political and financial difficulties are really auditions for the role of Nero. Make noise but do not attempt to fix what is wrong. They are more concerned with appearances that facts.

There is no easy answer and current solutions all come down to the same thing: putting the problem off rather than facing it. Americans are willing to accept this and will suffer the consequences.

Actual Ideas

Will any of the candidates talk about the importance of homework? How about shutting off the television? How about what sacrifices he is willing to make?  How about congress takes a pay cut? What sacrifices are elected officials willing to make? Some cynic said that government was the last refuge of the incompetent...no wait. That was addiction counselors. Anyway it would be a good place to start.

Keep your nose to the grindstone your shoulder to the wheel and your ear to the ground. You won't accomplish much but you will get some attention.

Ok Here we Go Again

I want a real debate. No moderators, no faux questions, just a referee and a time keeper. No judges. Three hours. Best two out of three.
No spitting
No punching
No swearing
No lying.

This will never happen. It will not happen because the issues facing the country have been hijacked by the media. The questioners have a vested interest in “Do you still beat your Wife?” questions. It is about ratings.

It is interesting to note that political action committees collect lots of money. Has it occoured to anyone that they also SPEND that money? The amount of money spent on election campaigns is a significant factor in the media world.
None of this has anything to do with ideology. It is about the lower right hand corner on the balance sheet of all the media corporations. If you are in favor of the Conservatives it is like saying you like Nissan better than Toyota or Coke better than Pepsi. Fox news found an under served demographic and filled a need. MSNBC is another brand. Contributors give money to BOTH political parties.

The best example of the nonsense that money makes everything better is what happened with the contributions for the 9/11 victims. A BIG FIGHT.

The problem is not Democrats or Republicans. It is the media and that does not include print media. Most folks do not Read The Paper. That requires effort. Much better to watch cable news. The problem is not the politicians. The problem is the electorate. One understands H. L. Menken and his cynicism. He once referred to the citizenry as “The Boobery”. And he was not referring to hooters, hulungas or hogans. He meant Boob in the sense of a not very bright person.

I do think I have an obligation to vote. I also think I have an obligation to inform my self on all levels. Not to decide who the good guys are or who the bad guys are but on the best way of handling the issues.

We are short on ideas. “Investing in food stamps” is not an idea. “Cutting Taxes” is not an idea.

There is a time for government spending and a time for cutting taxes. But when it is ALWAYS time for a stimulus or ALWAYS time for a tax cut it is a sign that the speaker is not thinking.

It comes down to the following statement.

I WANT X, Y AND Z AND I WANT SOMEONE ELSE TO PAY FOR IT. I'VE GOT MY RIGHTS, YOU KNOW!

And We're Back!

My buddy Scratch says he reads these rantings and so here we go again. I watched Newt Gingerich (with whom I profoundly disagree) give the most amazing speech on his position of running for president I've yet seen. No criticism just ideas. He also said something interesting. He said that when legislation gets started everything changes. The special interest groups line up and that is why the health care bill was 2700 pages. Nobody knew what was in it. The special interest groups did not want anyone to know what was in it.

He also said the media focused on a congressman's weird tweets while the budget crisis was deepening. (Talking about Anthony Weiner I guess). Amazing! He said that the debates are a sham. We all know that but folks get so caught up in cheering for "our side" that they lose the capacity to think. There are no debates. The news media wants to be an integral part of the broadcast. Newt said he wanted "Lincoln Douglas style debates".
If our house is on fire we do not ask the political affiliation of the fireman operating the ladder truck. We are not interested in his skin color or how he voted or if he believes in God.

So, Root for your team if you must but pick up the trash in front of your house and don't be part of the great unwashed.

The Rev.

I am having trouble with the format but here goes.

Brace Beemer is Dead!

Who is that you say?

He is the original announcer on the radio show The Lone Ranger.  It was broadcast from radio station WXYZ in Detroit. In 1938 or so he became the Lone Ranger. The movies, syndicated radio show and TV shows all started in Detroit. He rode through the west righting wrongs and not asking for payment or recognition. He was a masked man who saved people.

He will not be stopping by to rescue the country.

The problem is not the executive branch. It is the Congress. We continue to have military actions and no declaration of war. They will not pass a budget.

You, my dear reader, will have no opportunity to do anything about this until November of 2012. If you watch the idiots on cable they will do nothing for you other than elevate your adrenalin levels.

"Eat your food, drink your water, move your bowels. When you are tired, go and lie down. The foolish will laugh at me but the wise will understand."

Solyndra and George Washington

are not connected in any fashion.

I am in favor of Congressional Hearings on this subject as we will have a role play about the right protecting one from prosecution. It is a continuation of all the other nonsense like Halliburton, Silverado, car companies, bail outs, you name it, what ever. The taxpayers are going to foot the bill, why should they not have a sideshow? We should get some entertainment for our taxes. Maybe someone could write some songs and get it to Broadway. "Solyndra The Musical". I personally do not have a cast in mind but all those out of work actors could be paying Rev. Leviticus Jackson's Social Security. Kind of a win/win for me.

Senator Tom Coburn says there is about a gazillion dollars in pork. (He says some senators are "cowards". He could be right. On both counts.) He is a Republican who does not seem to care what his party thinks. He also says the primary motivation is reelection. In both parties. He seems to think that the absence of reason is a problem. Venal, small people his colleagues. (Venal: capable of betraying honor, duty or scruples for a price; corruptible.)

The media is in on it for the following reason: they need access to fill cable channels and newspaper columns. The loans were approved. If anyone in the media were truly serious they would begin publishing photographs of both the governmental officials and the corporate officials who were involved. No accusations, just photos and job titles.

This is what happens when folks with no knowledge of science, business or accounting decide who has access to the treasury. It would be nice to know who has a degree in the hard sciences or some math based skills.

The oils spill in the Gulf revealed just how ignorant the news media is in terms of science. No one expects them to be teaching calculus at MIT with training as a journalist. But the oil field workers here knew EXACTLY what happened. This is a reflection of the fact that we are no longer producing scientists is America. Well we are but they do not come from public high schools. They come from the Indian Subcontinent. Or Malaysia. Or Kenya. Or Russia.

We are electing folks the way we choose our sports teams: we have become fans. Short for fanatic. We have picked a team and are on it. No matter the
consequences. There is a way to the future but not if we refuse to take it. We repeat the same actions and expect a different consequence.

Ron Paul and Louis Farrakhan are similar in that they say some logical things and then say something that sounds like a headline from The Weekly World News. You remember them...Supermarket Tabloid? "Batboy Marries Madonna"? "Elvis Shot Kennedy"? (They caused my second divorce. I hated going grocery shopping so I would read the headlines to anyone who would listen. Wife #2 couldn't take the embarrassment of admitting she was sleeping with an idiot.) Newt Gingerich should be a member of this club. Smart stuff/dumb stuff club. Maybe this could be the third party we have all been hoping for. Hell, anything is possible.

Window Lickers

Most of what passes for commentary on the airwaves is actually VAUDEVILLE!
No matter how you look at it the show must go on. Rush Limbaugh once said "Politics is showbiz for ugly people." Kind of hard to argue the point. Could Lincoln get elected today? NOOOOOO! Too tall and those ears would do Dumbo proud. It is appearance and not thought that counts.

Remember this at all times. Newscasters all have what is called a "Disfigurement Clause". Meaning that if something happens and the talking head winds up looking like Quasimoto the career is gone. Maybe they could go to radio. You can be butt ugly in radio and still have fans and a career. But that takes more talent. You have to create pictures in the mind of the listener. You the listener have to bring something to the table. Still it does not lead to cogent thought.

There are several radio show in Chicago that appeal to thoughtful listeners and the Canadian Broadcasting system is a gem. Phil Hendrie says more with his satirical characters than most folks do in an entire career. Most talking heads are window lickers. Matter of fact they give window lickers a bad name.

Last thought. Did you ever notice how car companies love Western Names? The Chevy Cheyenne. The Tucson. The Aztec. The Dodge Dakota. The Chevy Apache There are lots of them. I live in Farmington New Mexico. Beautiful place. Hunt, fish, take pictures, mountains short distance away, great and I mean great Library (google it and look at the pictures) Ship Rock, Navajo folks, fry bread, tamales to die for and is there one bleepin' car named for us? Not on your life. I am not whining, I am just saying.

I am tired as I handled some sacks of concrete this afternoon. I am going home and take a hot shower.
Blessings on your little pointed heads.

Solyndra Fiasco

What we have here is Bush Lite. The current occupant is not familiar with accounting practices, spread sheets, balance sheets, investment banking or how Washington works. He is lost like Jimmy Carter: good guy but not mean enough. Constitutional law is wonderful but does not address the sweeping changes that need to be made. We have nonsense on a massive scale. Fox is not to blame and neither is PMSNBC. Sean Hannity does not govern. Neither does Chris Matthews. The idea that pundits who have no command of the English language should have this much influence defies common sense. William Buckley could read and write unlike the current crop of pseudo conservatives. "I think we need Harry Truman."
Harry is dead. He is not coming back.

They all want to be frightened and get me to be also. The country is not the East Coast nor the West Coast. That is where the money is located. We cannot go backward and Shane is not going to solve our problems. The Lone Ranger was invented in Detriot for radio. He is not real. The country goes on in spite of the idiots in power.  None of the current crop of congressmen/senators will ask the electorate to do the right thing. They are there to be reelected and nothing else.
They fear the electorate. Where is the Foghorn Leghorn when we need him?
There is no facet of my life or yours that does not interest them. When was the last time you heard any of them say "That's none of my business.."?

I watched the Solyndra hearings and NOBODY WAS RESPONSIBLE! The guy being questioned as to who approved the loan could not say who signed off on it. This is no different than Halliburton during the Bush Administration. No one thought to ask "Why are you wasting our time if you cannot give intelligible concise answers?" Talk about who needed to be water boarded! We need to make use of enhanced interrogation with all governmental officials. This is not Democrat or Republican.

Obama got elected on the slogan "Hope". It was an advertising campaign. There is no Republican candidate who can be taken seriously. I would vote for David Stockman who says we have to pay for EVERYTHING through taxes. He worked for Reagan. He pointed out that Ronnie raised taxes four times. The Democrats think spending solves everything and The GOP says all problems including cancer and acne are solved by tax cuts. Anyone who thinks this has anything to do with real life is nuts. It is a soap opera without the organ music (think of Search for Tomorrow on CBS). All of this would be funny if not for the consequences.

Mike Golic is one of my favorite sports commentators  and this is a quote.
" Anybody who thinks sports is real life is crazy." The same is true for broadcast hacks. There is nothing I can do to affect the situation until voting day. Getting upset is a waste of time.

I once heard a guy say "I get all my information where all good Americans do: Television". Unfortunately this has come to have an enormous influence on the electorate.
The fact that we now have 500 channels and not enough programming content leads to reruns of trash and bloviating politicians. They all need face time. What better use of cspan than hearings on an obvious blivit. (Ten pounds of pig manure in a five pound sack.) It is just the current piece of gristle to chew on.

Tax the rich? Where the hell do you think they get their money? Tax businesses? Who do you think will really foot the bill? That's right, Sparky. You and I will pay through increased prices.

Reduce taxes? What will cover the deficit other than borrowing and what does that do to the value of the dollar. Again the consumer pays.

We need to get over the idea that the other guy should pay for stuff. It doesn't work that way.

Current Messes

Where to start.
Go to Richard Dreyfuss. He has a wonderful take on America and how it functions. I no longer look at the world as liberal or conservative as those terms have no meaning. They are buzz words designed to designate which roller derby team one follows. My favorite was the Bay Area Bombers with Charlie O'Connell. But I digress.

There is no real political commentary in the main stream currently. It is not a debate nor even an actual discussion. It is entertainment. It may even be the new religion. There was once an ongoing debate over total immersion baptism replete with personal invective. Now the cry is "Cut taxes!" with as much thought as the other slogan "But what about the poor!" They are not well thought out. Most commentary is about my team winning. This is where we will begin Dear Reader. More later.
